15 kg is 33.07 pounds, or 33 lb 1.1 oz. That is 2 stone 5 pounds if you are reading this from the UK. For quick mental math, double the kilograms and add 10%: 15 x 2 = 30, plus 3 = 33 lb.
Below you get the exact conversion in every unit people ask for, a lookup table for every weight from 10 to 25 kg, what 15 kg really looks like (with sourced weights, not guesses), and the part most guides skip: whether a 15 kg bag is allowed on 20 airlines, in the cabin and in the hold.

15 kg in every unit
| Unit | 15 kg equals | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Pounds (lb) | 33.07 lb | 15 x 2.20462 |
| Pounds and ounces | 33 lb 1.1 oz | 0.0693 lb x 16 oz |
| Ounces (oz) | 529.1 oz | 15 x 35.274 |
| Stone and pounds | 2 st 5.07 lb | 33.07 lb / 14 = 2.362 st |
| Grams | 15,000 g | 15 x 1,000 |
| Metric tonnes | 0.015 t | 15 / 1,000 |
The exact factor is 1 kg = 2.20462262 lb, and 1 lb is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. If you use 2.2 instead, 15 kg comes out as 33.0 lb. That is 0.07 lb (about 1 oz) short, an error of 0.2%, which is fine for the gym or a bag of rice and not fine for a scale that decides your overweight fee.
The mental-math trick that works every time
Double the kilograms, then add one tenth of that result. It is the same as multiplying by 2.2, but you can do it in your head at the check-in desk.
- 15 kg: 30 + 3 = 33 lb
- 20 kg: 40 + 4 = 44 lb
- 23 kg: 46 + 4.6 = 50.6 lb (exact: 50.71 lb)
Going the other way, from pounds to kilograms, halve the pounds and subtract 10% of that: 33 lb / 2 = 16.5, minus 1.65 = 14.85 kg. The exact answer is 14.97 kg.

Weights right around 15 kg, in 0.1 kg steps
If your scale reads 14.6 or 15.3 rather than a round 15, use this.
| kg | lb | kg | lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14.0 kg | 30.86 lb | 15.0 kg | 33.07 lb |
| 14.1 kg | 31.09 lb | 15.1 kg | 33.29 lb |
| 14.2 kg | 31.31 lb | 15.2 kg | 33.51 lb |
| 14.3 kg | 31.53 lb | 15.3 kg | 33.73 lb |

| 14.8 kg | 32.63 lb | 15.8 kg | 34.83 lb |

Pounds to kg, 30 to 40 lb
The reverse question, for readers with a US scale.
| lb | kg | lb | kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 lb | 13.61 kg | 36 lb | 16.33 kg |
| 31 lb | 14.06 kg | 37 lb | 16.78 kg |
| 32 lb | 14.51 kg | 38 lb | 17.24 kg |
| 33 lb | 14.97 kg | 39 lb | 17.69 kg |
| 34 lb | 15.42 kg | 40 lb | 18.14 kg |
| 35 lb | 15.88 kg | 41 lb | 18.60 kg |
So 33 lb is 14.97 kg, just under 15 kg, and 35 lb is 15.88 kg. That is why a 35 lb kettlebell or a 35 lb pail of cat litter is the closest US-size thing to 15 kg.
What does 15 kg look like?
Numbers do not help much when you are trying to picture a weight. Here are real objects close to 15 kg, using manufacturer, official or reference figures. Where an item is a few kilos off, the table says so.

| Item | kg | lb | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 liters of water | about 15 | 33.07 | USGS: water is about 1 g per mL |
| Titan Fitness 15 kg Olympic bumper plate (450 mm wide) | 15 | 33.07 | Titan Fitness product page |
| Rogue 16 kg kettlebell (labeled 35 lb) | 16 | 35.27 | Rogue Fitness |
| Tidy Cats 35 lb pail of cat litter | 15.88 | 35 | Retail pack size |
| Panasonic NN-SN766S microwave (2.2 cu ft) | 14.5 | 32 | Panasonic spec page |
| Panasonic NN-SN966S microwave (2.2 cu ft) | 16.8 | 37 | Panasonic spec page |
| Two regulation bowling balls (max 16 lb each) | 14.5 | 32 | Wikipedia, citing USBC specs |
| Midea 3.1 cu ft compact fridge (heavier than 15 kg) | 21.5 | 47.4 | Midea US product page |
Two rules of thumb fall out of this. A liter of water is a kilo, so any 15 liter container of liquid is roughly 15 kg before the container. And a countertop microwave is about the weight of a heavy checked bag.

A typical child of about 3 and a half weighs around 15 kg, which answers the common question about how old a child is at 15 kg. Medians are not a verdict on any one child, since healthy kids sit well above and below them. The figures come from the WHO weight-for-age tables.
Is 15 kg heavy to lift?
For most healthy adults, no. The NIOSH lifting equation, used in workplace ergonomics, starts from a recommended limit of 23 kg (51 lb) for a single lift in ideal conditions: load close to the body, at waist height, no twisting, short duration. Real life is rarely ideal, so the practical limit drops fast with awkward shapes, lifting from the floor or repeating the lift.
The REI backpacking guide suggests keeping a loaded pack to about 20% of your body weight for multi-day trips and about 10% for day hikes. Working that out, 15 kg is a comfortable multi-day load for someone around 75 kg (165 lb). It is a lot for a day hike unless you weigh 150 kg. That calculation is ours, not REI's.
Is 15 kg okay for a carry-on?

Mostly no. Only a couple of airlines let you bring this much into the cabin, and several (Delta, JetBlue, Air Canada) have no weight limit at all, just a size limit and a rule that you must lift the bag into the overhead bin yourself. Across the airlines we checked, the weight limits were:
- easyJet: up to 15 kg for either cabin bag size
- Frontier: 35 lb (15.9 kg) for the carry-on
- Air France: 12 kg in total (hand bag plus small bag)
- Ryanair and Wizz Air: 10 kg for the larger cabin bag, which costs extra
- British Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines: 8 kg (Turkish adds a separate 4 kg personal item)
- Emirates and Qatar Airways: 7 kg (15 lb)
Careful with that last line. A 15 lb Emirates carry-on is 7 kg, not 15 kg. Mixing pounds and kilograms is the classic way to get stopped at the gate.
Is 15 kg okay for a checked bag?

Almost always, yes. The standard economy limit is 23 kg (50 lb) on most major airlines, so a 15 kg bag leaves you 8 kg (about 18 lb) of headroom. The exceptions are budget carriers, where weight is sold in steps. If you are packing close to a limit, packing cubes make it easier to split the weight and find the heavy items, and our travel tips for international flights cover the rest of the airport routine.
| Airline | Carry-on weight limit | First checked bag, economy |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | No weight limit (size only) | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| American | No weight limit found, size 22x14x9 in | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| United | Size 22x14x9 in, weight not stated | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| Southwest | Size 24x16x10 in | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| JetBlue | No weight limit | 50 lb (22.68 kg) |
| Alaska | Size 22x14x9 in | 50 lb (23 kg) |
| Spirit | Size 22x18x10 in | 50 lb (22.6 kg) |
| Frontier | 35 lb (15.9 kg) | 40 lb (18.1 kg), more with some bundles |
| Ryanair | 10 kg bag with Priority; small bag free | Options of 10 kg or 20 kg |
| easyJet | Up to 15 kg | 15 kg or 23 kg hold bag |
| Wizz Air | 10 kg with Priority | 10, 20, 26 or 32 kg, bought separately |
| British Airways | 8 kg combined | 23 kg included in economy |
| Lufthansa | 8 kg | 23 kg in standard economy; none free on Economy Light |
| Air France | 12 kg total | 23 kg, depends on fare |
| Emirates | 7 kg (15 lb) | 20 to 35 kg by fare on weight routes |
| Qatar Airways | 7 kg (15 lb) | 20 to 35 kg by fare on weight routes |
| Turkish Airlines | 8 kg plus 4 kg personal item | 23 kg per bag |
| Air Canada | No weight limit | 23 kg (50 lb) |
| Qantas | 7 kg international economy | Varies by route, 23 to 30 kg |
| Singapore Airlines | 7 kg | 25 to 30 kg by fare; 2 x 23 kg to USA and Canada |
Three things worth knowing. First, a 15 kg suitcase is under the limit nearly everywhere, but easyJet is the one airline where 15 kg is an actual product you can buy. Second, Frontier's 40 lb checked limit is lower than the 50 lb you see on legacy carriers. Third, overweight fees change often and differ by route and fare, so we left them out on purpose. Use the airline's own page for your ticket, for example easyJet's cabin bag rules if you fly them.
