TOURS TO CHERNOBYL AND PRYPIAT

Tours to Chernobyl and Prypiat by Gamma Travel - Gamma Travel

The first tours to the Chernobyl exclusion zone were conducted in the early 1990s with mainly journalists and scientists who were interested in Chernobyl. Now, with every single passing year this unique destination is becoming more and more popular and in 2017 nearly 50,000 people visited Chernobyl. Forbes magazine called Chernobyl the most exotic place to visit on Earth, and really where else can you experience post apocalyptic world, see how fast nature is taking over and travel a few decades back to the time of the Soviet era that doesn’t exist anymore. A Tour to Chernobyl is truly an eye-opening adventure, which will print in your memory forever. Our story began 8 years ago when we came to Chernobyl just for one day, and it then became our life, our passion and we want to share it with you and tell you the true story of Chernobyl.

There are private and scheduled tours to Chernobyl exclusion zone. We provide one-day scheduled Chernobyl tours and two-day scheduled Chernobyl tours, when you are a part of a group max 12 people. Please check available dates for those tours here. Scheduled tours to Chernobyl zone provide a great opportunity to get acquainted with the impressive world of Chernobyl for reasonable price. Plus, you can stay overnight in the town of Chernobyl during a 2- day Chernobyl tour. It is absolutely safe to do this, as background radiation in Chernobyl town is even lower than in Kyiv, but it definitely adds to experience.
Private/photo trip is our specialty.  You may book 1-2 day private tour, or 3-5 day private tour1-2 day private tours are for those who want to see maximum locations at their own pace based on their own preferences, on date that is good for them and just themselves or with friends/colleagues. 3-5 day private/photo tours are for photographers, explorers, and people, who have visited Chernobyl and now want to experience it in depth.  We provide Kyiv sightseeing and Missile base tours as well.

FEEDBACK

Could hardly be any better.

Could hardly be any better. Nikolai is clever, creative, understanding, and very reliable. His English skills are way above average (would guess Cambridge level C1 or even higher), so even communicating pretty tricky details is easy with him. We have seen many awesome non-standard places and things in the zone with him, and I can therefore truly recommend him as guide - especially if you are a little more curious and adventurous than the average visitor. It will really pay off.
PS: as he knows a hell lot of photography himself he has an amazing understanding of perspective and light. Hence, whatever your preferences are, Nikolai will be able to guide you to the right spot at the right time to get whichever awesome shot you are after.

Recommend Gamma-Travel to everyone who wants to see the Zone

Had a two day tour with Nikolai in July 2018 and throughly enjoyed it.
He spoke excellent English and he was happy to answer questions and discuss anything further.
Only advice I would give is bring insect repellent. The are so many annoying mosquitos in the zone.
I would recommend Gamma-Travel to everyone who wants to see the Zone.

Can't recommend enough

This is one of the most memorable tours you'll ever do and to have someone do knowledgeable, interesting and friendly as Nikolai showing us around was incredible. Having been twice, I'd recommend à multi-day tour, there's plenty to see, explore and learn. Can't recommend enough.

Amazing guide

Nikolai was an amazing guide! I booked a 3 day tour with him in the zone and had an awesome time. We visited Pripyat as well as some of the outer farm villages. As a photographer he allowed plenty of time for me to get the shots! I plan on returning next year and I will definitely be using Gamma Travel again!

Trip to Chernobyl

Congratulations, you are now one step away from an unforgettable experience! We are here to tell you that the perfect time for visiting Chornobyl is right now. If you are still in doubt whether to go to the Exclusion Zone or not, whether to do it now or “maybe later”, our answer is: Do it, and do it ASAP! And here are 3 key reasons why:

  1. The town of Pripyat is literally falling apart. Buildings that we were allowed to visit yesterday are being demolished by time and nature today. Who knows if we will be able to walk through those streets tomorrow? A tour to Pripyat is available nowadays but probably won’t be available in just a few years.
  2. New Safe confinement is now finished! A huge metal arch fully covers the old sarcophagus, which means that we can stand 100 meters away from the reactor core and the level of radiation will be just slightly higher than in Kyiv. Isn’t it amazing? Visiting Chernobyl has never been as safe as today.
  3. We never know what will happen tomorrow to us to you, to the Exclusion Zone, to Ukraine. Our current political situation is not stable and our laws are changing very fast. It is allowed to visit the zone today and we need to catch this chance, not to regret it in the future.

By the way, among our tourists we have never met a person who said that they regretted going on a tour.

Prypiat tour

The iconic abandoned town of Prypiat (you may see different spellings) attracts more and more visitors nowadays. Depending on the length of your tour and whether it is a private or a group tour, you will be able to see these places:

  • The Amusement park with its famous Ferris wheel (of course!), bumper cars and other abandoned swings
  • City center with the Palace of culture, restaurant and one of the first supermarkets in the USSR
  • Hotel “Polissya”
  • Several kindergartens with creepy dolls and toys
  • Schools with Soviet propaganda pictures and books. Some of the classrooms still have those remains.
  • Hospital #126 where the first firefighters were brought
  • River port with a cafe
  • Machine graveyard
  • Several hotspots: places where radiation is extremely high (so don’t forget to take your Geiger counters)

And lots of other interesting and extremely haunting places. Please note that since 2012 going inside buildings is forbidden.

Walking through abandoned town is such a great experience that you can’t compare it to anything else. Seeing pictures of ruined flats and kids’ books on the Internet do not affect you that much. But being here physically is much more overwhelming and it really gives you goosebumps. Book your Chernobyl tour tomorrow to make sure you can tick this mysterious place out of your bucket list.

Nuclear power plant tour

Gamma Travel gives you a unique opportunity to visit a nuclear power plant inside on a private tour. You will need to wear special clothes and sometimes even a respirator mask.

During 4-5 hours tour you can:

  • see the administration office and get acquainted with some of the staff
  • learn about how the RBMK nuclear reactor worked and see it’s small model
  • find out what exactly happened on the night of the accident from the scientific point of view
  • walk through the long “golden” corridors between the reactors
  • visit one of the control rooms

You aren’t allowed to spend a long time in the control room due to high doses of radiation, but it will be enough time for you to feel the atmosphere and take some cool pictures. Your Chornobyl visit will be unforgettable!

FAQ

What happened at Chernobyl?

One of the reactors of the nuclear power plant exploded, bringing up tons of radiation and spreading it across ex-Soviet Union and European countries. The effects of this disaster can still be felt today.

Where is Chernobyl situated?

Chernobyl town is located in the north of Ukraine, 130 km from Kyiv and very close to the border with Belarus. A trip to Chernobyl from the capital takes about 2 hours.

When did Chernobyl happen?

The date is the 26th of April 1986, but the exact time is still unknown: approximately at 1.23 in the morning.

What was Chernobyl? What does it stand for?

Chernobyl is the name of a small town, which is situated few miles away from the nuclear power plant.

Can you visit Chernobyl nowadays?

Today visiting Chernobyl is absolutely possible for everyone who is 18+ and requests for a special permit in advance. Gamma Travel takes care about all legal procedures needed if you’re booking Chernobyl tour through our company.

When can you visit Chernobyl? Is it seasonal?

You can visit Chernobyl any day of the year except of 26th of April, as this day is reserved for the local people and government officials to come for the annual ceremony to commemorate the victims. High season is considered approximately from April to November, although during the low season everything looks even more empty and mysterious.

How many tourists visit Chernobyl?

In 2019 nearly 120 000 tourists attended this place. It is expected to see way more in 2020 due to the popularity of HBO production.

Why is Pripyat forbidden? Can you live there?

This city was located very close (about 3 km) to the nuclear power plant and therefore was extremely contaminated with radioactive elements after the accident. People were evacuated from here forever. Today these people can visit Prypiat but they can never live there again due to the high doses of radiation. Moreover, Pripyat has being destroyed by nature for the past decades because of the absence of human maintenance.

Why is Pripyat a ghost town?

Pripyat has been uninhabited for many years. All the buildings, including schools and kindergartens, government offices, bus station, river port, shops, cafes and other buildings are completely abandoned. Only a few personal belongings, furniture and equipment is left in the houses.

Why is Pripyat still abandoned? Can you come back?

Pripyat belongs to the 10 km exclusion zone, which means that no one will ever live there again because of the high concentration of radioactive particles in the soil, metal parts and buildings.

Where is Pripyat Chernobyl? Is it the same?

Both of these settlements are situated in the north of Ukraine. Chernobyl is a small town a few miles away from the power plant. Some people still stay there to maintain the surroundings. Pripyat is an absolutely abandoned city very close (2-3 km) to the power plant.
